Born into a world of contrasts and raised on the belief that observation is the writer’s greatest tool, Ronald Leslie James Kirk has spent his life collecting the kind of stories that only experience can produce. From the trading floors of the City of London to the quiet harbours of northern France, his life has been his material — and his books are the result.
The Roots
South African Beginnings
Ronald Leslie James Kirk’s perspective on the world was forged in the vibrant, complex, and often contradictory landscapes of South Africa. It was here that he first learned to observe — to notice the details that others overlooked, to find the story within the story. South Africa gave him his eye for human complexity, his instinct for the dramatic, and his deep respect for resilience in all its forms.
Those formative years planted the seeds of everything that would follow — a life lived at full stretch, across industries, continents, and cultures, always watching, always absorbing, always building the raw material from which his books would eventually emerge.
One of the first life lessons Ronald learned in South Africa was the critical difference between Tribalism and Racism. Tribalism is a defence mechanism wired into mankind for over 300,000 years — and deep into the DNA of animals as well. Racism, by contrast, is the dominance of one group over another. Without understanding the difference, it is easy to become confused, as Ronald himself once was.
He initially believed the Apartheid system was pure racism. It was not. It was a mixture of both, biased heavily towards tribalism — the word itself means “separateness” in Afrikaans. Ronald had expected to witness hatred between black and white communities. He did not. What he witnessed instead were far stronger enmities between the black tribes themselves, such as the Bantus and the Zulus. It was a lesson in human complexity that has shaped the way he observes the world — and writes about it — ever since.
Ronald’s professional life took him into the heart of international finance and corporate leadership. He spent years working with major institutions across the City of London — raising capital, building business cases, and navigating the pressure of high-stakes environments where clarity of thought and precision of language were not optional extras but survival skills.
It was a life that took him across the globe — to South Africa, the United States, across Europe, and eventually to the coastal towns of northern France, where he and his wife now live. Along the way, he gathered the experiences, the characters, and the moments that would eventually find their way onto the page.
When a vicar and a lecturer in English literature both independently suggested he write his observations down, Ronald took the idea seriously — and discovered that the discipline he had applied to boardroom presentations and investment appraisals translated, surprisingly naturally, to the craft of storytelling.

A Commitment Beyond the Page
Ronald’s sense of purpose has always extended beyond his own ambitions. Throughout his life he has dedicated time and energy to community causes and charitable work — including his support for the British Military and the men and women who serve. That commitment to something larger than oneself is not incidental to his writing. It runs through it — in the quiet heroism of his characters, in his respect for sacrifice, and in his belief that the best stories are the ones that remind us of what really matters.

Denis Warren
Denis Warren played an important role in Ronald’s development, offering guidance, encouragement, and perspective throughout key stages of his journey. His mentorship helped shape Ronald’s approach to personal growth, professional responsibility, and the value of learning from experience. In particular he taught him how to cope under intense pressure and how to properly calibrate stress. At one level it keeps you alert and focussed. At another it can overwhelm if allowed to. There were lessons on the art of negotiation; when to introduce silence and knowing when to walk away. Through his support and influence, Denis contributed to the foundation upon which Ronald built his career and broader outlook on life.
Tony Marchington
Tony Marchington was one of Ronald’s most remarkable mentors. During his career with ICI, he worked internationally and later undertook government-related assignments connected to the monitoring of chemical weapons developments. He became the owner of the famous British railway locomotive, the Flying Scotsman, and was widely respected for his work on genetic sequencing models. Well known within Oxford University circles, Tony exposed Ronald to a broader perspective including influential scientists, business leaders, and the political actors. One memorable occasion saw Ronald accompanying him to a formal dinner in Oxford’s Great Hall, where distinguished professors, senior financiers, and international political figures gathered. Through experiences such as these, Tony broadened Ronald’s understanding of leadership, strategy, and global political affairs, leaving a lasting impact on his personal and professional development.
