NOTTINGHAM LACE

During our lives we attempt to weave orderly patterns from firm anchor points. It can lead to a full and contented life just like a piece of Nottingham Lace. But suppose those anchor points are blown away in life’s storms and it becomes a spider’s web, a fatal trap for the unwary, what then? In a Flanders Field I met an Australian Army Veteran whose life was in danger of being ripped apart. It happens to many. A tragic event that makes them vulnerable and then one after another sledgehammer blows that takes away any resistance. Fortunately for him a friend spots the signs and steps in. Others aren’t so lucky. I will never forget that day when he recounted his story and we hugged each other as lost brothers.

THE EMISSARY

A story of a raw working class recruit mentored into the ways of international special operatives and the gradual introduction into secret countervailing acts in order to destabilise their adversaries. The introduction into operations of Mi6 staffed by men and women of high intellect and quiet courage who operate in the spaces none of us are aware of. The unseen and unrecognised achievements they bring for our safety and well-being. The Emissary explores what happens when a man of basic education meets the malevolent forces of evil, and what he discovers about himself in the process. A novel of bizarre events but each containing a grain of truth, told within an historical context, and deeply human dramas.

BITTER AND BORDEAUX

Set amongst the vineyards and village squares of southwestern France and the beer fermenting vessels of a Northern Brewery, Bitter and Bordeaux explores the clash of cultures between an aristocracy and a working class community. The characters are drawn from both social groups and how they interact. They are based on real people, or a mixture of personalities. It is an affectionate light-hearted, yet layered story of a long lost era in British cultural life. With warmth, wit, and a glass of something excellent, Ronald indulges in a nostalgic recall of a decade in his life and explores what happens when you place totally opposite characters against each other, something is bound to happen. He readily admits it was the only the second time in his long career he had to gather himself on the driveway of his home before walking away from people he had a strong affection for.

But Daddy...What is a Jew?

Based on the actual daily journal of a teenage Jewish boy living through the German Occupation of Paris, this is a story of identity, survival, and extraordinary courage in impossible circumstances. Until the War broke out he was not remotely aware of his Jewish background and how easily his countrymen would change their persona and play on his ethnicity. Ronald has dramatized the events of the journal to bring them to life for a modern readership  creating a work of historical fiction that honours its source while making it vivid, urgent, and deeply moving. For beyond the page remove direct reference to Gilbert O’Sullivan and Joel Baker as I have not had legal clearance from them yet, but they will receive a copy of the website Insert a New Sub- Section

Brexit - The Passing of a Decade

In 2016, Ronald was considering how the complexities of Brexit could be explained in a way that was both engaging and accessible to a broad national audience. He developed the concept of an imagined conversation in which he is seated on a bench on the top of the historic fortress walls of Saint-Malo, discussing the impending Brexit with the renowned 18th Century French statesman, diplomat, military figure, and author, François-René de Chateaubriand. Through this fictional dialogue, Ronald explores the political, historical, and cultural dimensions of Brexit from both British and European perspectives. He comes to a surprising, for him, conclusion and now with the benefit of hindsight ponders on the outcome over the last decade.
